Pumpkin Growers BlogJuly 9, 2008 Life in the ground
I replaced the soaker hose with a longer one yesterday, so that I could cover the whole area. The bunnies still float by but don't seem as interested in trying to get in. I bought more spikes for the fence to secure a couple loose areas, those will go in this weekend.
The plants are looking okay but one has some fragments missing from the bigger leafs on it. Not sure what happened to it. I'm noting that the first two leaves that each seedling had when they first sprouted seem to be getting yellow and possibly dying. Not sure if this is normal, but they all seem to be doing this. Maybe the first leaves were just "baby leafs" and now that the permenant leaves have arrived, the baby ones are no longer needed.
All the plants' bottom stalks are getting thicker. I hope this means some vine action. I'll keep the watering up on them every day.
The "leader" is quickly becoming the follower. His leaves are still growing, but I don't think he's keeping up with the others.
A very interesting side note. When I did the transplant, I had 4 plants left over from the pot that I didn't have room for in the garden. I put those four down in the compost heap with the grass that I had tranplanted. The group of four seem quite, quite healthy and appear to be growing! How is this possible. They are in a very shady spot. They haven't gotten a lot of water. They mostly were left for dead, but I did give them a chance by putting them on the compost heap where food is plentiful.
Wouldn't it be weird if these four actually grew into something while being neglected? Actually it would be very sad. But hey, if those things grow down there, I know what to do next year... just toss seeds down there and forget about it. This would leave the garden open to other foods!
