Pumpkin Growers BlogJuly 27, 2008 The flowers behave kind of weird. The male flowers that is. I came out this morning at about 9am and saw four male flowers wide open... I mean dressed and ready. Bees were already on them. So, I thought it would be cool to snap pictures of them a little later.
I came back out at 11am and they were all closed! Huh? Wonder why. They did not open back up, and it looked like they were dying off kind of.
Not sure what that means, but I can see quite a few more male flower buds popping up here and there... and they are up too. These flowers stand straight up and are about a foot off of the ground. The lone female flower is still there, but hasn't opened yet... at least not that I've seen.
I see at least 7 more female flower buds on the various vines and countless male buds. I still see a lot of little buds growing all over the vines.
Well, I put some more top soil on the vines that have reached out. These vines are a good three feet away from the base plant. I hit them all with some Miracle-Gro yesterday and then sprayed on more Bug Stop to cure them of bug problems. I had to clip some dead leaves away as well.
The weeds are in there still so I yanked out a few of them, but I gotta be honest and say that I just don't see these little weeds matching up with the power of these pumpkin plants. I think they don't stand a chance. But I yank'em out just to be safe.
The "Leader" is not vining out at all, but rather just hanging at home and budding as well. He does look very healthy, so I think we might get something out of him yet.
The compost pile of leftover plants, I'm going to call dead and buried, they aren't growing well at all and I think the bunnies have found them.
