Pumpkin Growers BlogAugust 19, 2008This morning I took care of the newly opened females close to the wire fence... I mean, I didn't even have to go into the garden to take care of them. It rained really good last night so no need for watering. I turn on the soaker hose every morning for about 5 minutes if no rain has fallen in the past day. Water is the main key to pumpkin growing, so I'm ready for it. Here's some information on the pumpkins as best I can describe them: Jessica - long, turning a lighter green. Not the first female flower, but the first to show signs of growth. Nancy - Fat and round, dark green... seems to be the largest. I had to clip a lot of leaves off her vine for the mildew disease removal. She's looks very good. Surprise - Small, shrimpy doesn't look like it has grown in a week since I've found it. Amber - Close to the fence and growing happily. Lisa - Back fence, flower fell off after one day of pollination but it is growing well. Zelda - Closest to the leader, growing well. I clipped its vine close to it to see if it would help or hurt. It helped. Shocker Mae - Little but growing. Very happy inside the vines. Unnamed #1 - Close to Amber. Flower closed and the ball fruit looks bigger. Unnamed #2 - Hidden in the vines like Shocker but it is in the middle of the garden. It is getting bigger. Unnamed #3 - This one is close to the corner of the wire fence farthest from the wood fence. Tucked in some vines, I never noticed this one until yesterday. It looks very healthy. And two more mature females make a potential 12... if Surprise doesn't make it, then only 11. Still more female buds popping up here and there, so lots of growth. The question now is, will any of these recent arrivals become mature, carvable pumpkins by the time Halloween arrives? |
