Pumpkin Growers Blog

August 31, 2008
The Leader's female flower has opened! It looked like it was going to and then it did. I didn't write about this yesterday, but I thought it would. I saw bees in there doing their job, so I think Leader will indeed get a pumpkin after all.
The rest of the patch is doing well. I went into the garden yesterday and did some more pruning around the areas where pumpkins are growing and vines are continuing to grow. I'd rather have that growth go to the pumpkin, so I clipped a lot.
The dead twins are gone now (they had been rotting). Near the dead twins, I found yet another pumpkin growing that I didn't see before. I did note this one when it was a flower, but I forgot about it... I was looking more at the twins. But this one is here and growing well... I almost mistook it for Marcie. But this one I'm callin', 'Danielle'.
I also put in a good dose of 18-18-21 fertilizer. This has been a good Saturday routine, prune and fertilize. I don't bother with the topsoil treatment anymore. There is no room to move around like that with a shovel. I'm afraid that I'll step on something important. I did go in with a tri-claw and ripped out a bunch of annoying weeds and grass. Although, I don't think they are going to affect the pumpkin plants too much, they bug me.
I now have 13 pumpkins growing. Jessica, Nancy, Amber, Lisa, Zelda, Shocker Mae, Sonic, Heather, Carrie, Wow, Marcie, Squiggle, and Danielle. The Leader's could be 14 if all goes well.
So, what am i gonna do with all these pumpkins? Carve IT - Count IT! =)

I might donate a few to friends and family, but the condition stands that they must be carved come Halloween time.
