Pumpkin Growers BlogSeptember 15, 2008Well, the patch has stopped growing and vining. Leaves are changing color with the cooler weather approaching and happening at night. The pumpkins on the vine are still growing a little but the norm will now just be their growth and that should be it. Jessica and Nancy are ready to come off and Shocker Mae and Carrie will soon follow. I'm going to continue the process of feeding the patch with 18-18-21 for the next couple weeks and see what else happens. A couple more casualties happened, Wow never grew beyond a lemon size and Danielle couldn't get past a grapefruit size. Heather doesn't look so good either. The rest look fine and appear to be growing normally like the top four did. Leader looks very good outside the fence. No need to water tomorrow as the remains of Hurricane Ike will be down-pouring onto the patch tonight. I'm going to make this my last blog entry because I have to focus my efforts to getting the rest of the Pumpkin Hunt website ready... but I'll take pictures of Amber, Lisa, Sonic, Squiggle, Marcie, Zelda, Leader, and Paige when they are done and post them on the final page. I'd like to say that this expereince has been very challenging yet rewarding. It was very cool to see the lifecycle of the pumpkin first had and see how these things grow from the tiny seed to the big plant. Watching the flower-pollination action take place was also very neat. I think I will definately try this again next year, this time with some experience on my side. I'll make sure to saturate the patch with all kind of compost and soil before starting it up in May. Before that, I might try a few other veggies to help reduce the grocery bill. I hope you've enjoyed this photo-journal of the pumpkin growing experience as much as I have. May it be an inspiration for all those who've thought about growing their own. If a novice like me can do it, surely anyone who wants to try it, can succeed. |
